British Telecom Drops Fusion Fixed-Mobile Convergence System; Is FMC DOA?
British Telecom Drops Fusion Fixed-Mobile Convergence System; Is FMC DOA? from the next-time-don't-be-so-optimistic dept British Telecom has pulled the plug on its Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) offering, Fusion. In 2005, the concept of Fixed Mobile Convergence was red hot. FMC involved using a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth radio in a cell phone to transfer calls back and forth between the cellular network, and a broadband-based network in the home of office. Ostensibly, this would be appealing to subscri

LA VoIP Users to Help Pay For More Police
Chalk this one up to another reason why more people should pay attention to what they agree to (and what their local politicians are telling them to do). According to DSL Reports, the city of LA has approved a new tax cut, that is really a tax hike. In response to a need to maintain their current police forces, the city has taken a telephone user tax and reduced it from 10% to 9%, however it has broadened the scope of the tax to include Internet phone services. It was cheap and when I was in the Dominican Republic, I could call home and talk for hours without worrying about long distance charges. Of course, since my number had a Florida area code, people without long distance service couldn't call me and if they did they would get charged for it. Then, the D-Link router they gave m

The Microsoft - Yahoo Merger: For Instant Messaging, It's Already Happened
Michael Robertson has something interesting to say about the Microsoft-Yahoo merger, still on hold, but likely, in the view of many observers, to eventually be consummated. Robertson is a pretty sharp guy. He founded MP3.com, which was bought by Vivendi Universal for a whole boatload of money in 2001, right before the dot-com crash. He founded Linspire, a flavor of Linux with a user interface that was inspired, if that's the word, by a very familiar one. I won't say which, except that the softwa

Author: boatman9 Posted: Sat Feb 09, 2008 2:02 pm (GMT -7) Topic Replies: 6 Gizmo uses different ports than Skype. Any chance you are running a software firewall that's blocking some ports? If you can try Gizmo on another computer (through the same Internet connection) then you'd get some idea if the problem is within your computer, or if your ISP is blocking some VoIP ports as some ISPs will do.
